Curiosity, intrigue and surprise. Those are the expressions on most visitors’ faces as they enter Why Not. A grocers? A craft market? A cafe? And for a couple of days, me! Taking time out from our gallery I've got my makers hat on again and I have come to North Berwick to exhibit my glass panels and jewellery in this very unique and exciting setting.

So, what is Why Not? It’s a hub for small local independent businesses and producers to have a presence on the high street. Home to an eclectic mix that encompasses an artisan soap maker, fishmonger and nail technician, as well as bespoke furniture and a changing array of makers. It's fast becoming a destination to meet, relax and browse a selection of locally sourced unique crafts, gifts and produce.

For me Why Not provides a platform to exhibit my work to a new audience. After 11 years at the Apple Market in Covent Garden I miss the buzz of market style trading. There's something very affirming about this type of selling.  People love 'meeting the maker' - it's relaxed, informal and a great way to feel part of a community. Much of my photography for my glass panels and cards is taken locally so there's plenty chat of beaches, dog walks and our elusive summer weather!

Why Not is the vision of Adam Elder and Jenny Potter and opened its doors 18 months ago. Adam describes their 'melting pot' as "unique, local and approachable."

And it is. Retail is not dying, it’s changing! For so many reasons Why Not is greater than the sum of its parts. As a maker, a shopper and keen supporter of the high street, I'll be back!

Come see for yourself…

 Why Not is open

Mon - Sat 10am -5.30pm & Sun 11am - 5pm

I'll be exhibiting there on 10-12th July.

Life as a craft maker is an exciting journey.  Hugely rewarding, fun and at times a little stressful!    I’ve met so many folk over the years who are fascinated by what it’s like “not to have a real job” I thought I’d use my blog as an opportunity to share what life is like for a self-employed glass artist in 2012.

There are plenty good bits!

Since moving to live by the seaside in Dunbar, I have been hugely inspired by the beautiful light on the East Coast.  The addition of Hagrid (our rough coated lurcher rescue dog from Stoke!) to our family, has meant we get to enjoy this view every morning!

Nature has always been a great inspiration in my work, and these morning walks are great thinking time.  Whether it’s the fresh sea air or the crashing waves, a lot of my best ideas arrive when I’m out walking.  With no distraction from phones or emails, this is one of my most enjoyable parts of the day.  So much of my day (surprising to many), is taken up with non-making activities like booking exhibitions, designing flyers, taking product photos and worst job of all doing accounts!  The hour from 8-9am is great for the creative juices, and a world away from our daily tube commute when we lived in London.

From here its back to the studio and breakfast!  And so the day begins...
